NRC urged to include community rights laws in constitution

A network of nine organisations, led by Prayong Doklamyai, yesterday urged National Reform Council president Thienchai Kirananda to include "community rights laws" in the new constitution.

After the group submitted the request yesterday, Thienchai said it would be pushed forward as soon as possible.
Prayong said people were worried about the junta’s previous orders over land encroachment, which took effect from August 1.
He said such orders caused 1,300 families accused of land encroachment to be entangled in 500 lawsuits.
Prayong also urged the NRC to push forward other related laws such as for land reform, progressive property tax, the establishment of a land bank to allow the poor access to and use of land, and a justice fund to help villagers fight encroachment lawsuits.
