Govt pay rises 'will hurt local administration'

An expert on local administrative organisations yesterday complained that the government's move to increase civil servants' pay by at least 4 per cent from December 1 would have adverse impacts on local administrations.

The pay hike benefits some 1.98 million people working in the public sector.
Narong Srithamma, an adviser on local administration, said yesterday the pay hike would also push up commodity prices in general.
“So, those who don’t get a pay hike [will] feel the pinch,” he said.
Narong said salaries of executives and employees of many local administrative bodies would not go up because of laws requiring that combined salaries must not be over 40 per cent of the local administrations’ total budget.
