Man gets suspended sentence for animal cruelty

Nong Khai Court yesterday sentenced a local resident to a one-year suspended jail term and Bt2,000 fine for violating the new Animal Welfare Bill, which went into effect on December 27.

Tha Bo district resident Khamdee Khottha, 50, was found guilty of torturing and injuring a pet dog belonging to his neighbour Jomsri Khamphukaew.
Following his arrest on Monday, police took Khamdee to court yesterday for prosecution and the verdict was read out at 4.30pm.
The year-old dog, which sustained a deep cut in its face after Khamdee threw a knife at it, is reportedly recovering from the injury.
Tha Bo superintendent Pol Colonel Somchai Sanguansakpakdee, who visited Jomsri and her dog yesterday, said police would help the kamnan and village headmen to notify the public about this new law, saying this case would serve as an example so people can learn to give importance to animals.
