Founded in 2012 at the International School Brunei, in partnership with UNICEF, the Gates Foundation, HRH Princess Sarah of Brunei, the Global Poverty Project and Standard Chartered Bank, it transformed the lives of over 10,000 children during its first year. Now, Polio Points has come to Bromsgrove International School Thailand, only the second school worldwide to introduce this trailblazing programme.
How does it work? When a student shows themselves to be an effective global citizen and an outstanding 21st Century learner, they are awarded a ‘Polio Point’. For every four polio points they receive, the school contributes US$1 to purchase one Polio vaccine for distribution in impoverished communities in Pakistan.
In other words, when a student does something amazing in school, they save a life.
The concept is so beautifully simple that it achieved unprecedented success in Brunei, and quickly trended widely on social media amongst NGOs and charities worldwide. With the launch at Bromsgrove, it has got even bigger and better and more exciting. Deputy Headmaster, Matthew Savage, has forged a partnership with Vivomiles, the UK’s leading student rewards website (www.vivomiles.com), and every Polio Point will now be proudly displayed online.
Polio Points is unique; it is beautiful; and it is big. Mr Savage is excited and ambitious, and now he hopes to spread this programme throughout Thailand and South East Asia. Together, he believes, it is the children of today who can fashion a polio-free world for tomorrow.
