Former MP gets jail for defaming political rival

Former Pheu Thai MP for Bangkok's Don Muang district, Karun Hosakul, was sentenced to one year and four months in prison for defaming his political rival, former Democrat MP for Bangkok Taenkhun Jitissara, yesterday.

The court found Karun guilty of violating Articles 326 and 328 of the Penal Code for going on two campaign stages to defame Taenkhun on June 3 and 12, 2011, in Don Muang district. The court found the groundless accusations had affected the reputation and credibility of Taenkhun, saying the accusations were made through loudspeakers at a public place and repeated.
The defendant earlier testified he did not mention the name of the plaintiff. Since the defendant cooperated in the court proceedings, the judges reduced the sentence from two years to one year and four months and ordered the defendant to publish three apologies in a newspaper within a month.
