VN workers can now register

The Cabinet yesterday endorsed a proposal from the Labour Ministry to register Vietnamese migrants in a move to regulate foreign workers based in Thailand, Deputy Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday.

Vietnamese nationals who work as housemaids, fishermen and construction and restaurant workers can register and apply for a work permit with the one-stop service centre at the province they are based in, Sansern said. He added that all workers needed to hold valid passports and must have entered Thailand legally.
Vietnamese workers are brought in as part of a bilateral agreement in order to meet the shortage of labour in Thailand, Sansern explained. The government had earlier registered migrant workers from Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. Cambodians make up the largest group of foreign workers in the Kingdom.
