A total 2,231 of the i3 cars were sold last year, including those fitted with a optional range-extending petrol engine.
This compares with 1,589 of the electric version of the Smart For two and 1,354 of Volkswagen's E-Up electric runabout.
The upright, four-door i3 was introduced at the Frankfurt Car Show in2014, but it remains a rare sight on roads in Germany. Unlike some Scandinavian countries, Berlin offers few incentives for motorists to go electric.
The US car magazine Car and Driver recently reported that BMW is not happy with domestic i3 sales, which are said to be running at only around a third of what was originally projected. The carmaker was therefore planning new buyer incentives.
