Plan to boost training of prisoners at some jails

The Corrections Department is pushing a plan to turn prisons into facilities where inmates are trained with specific skill sets.

Under this project to boost inmates’ potential for rehabilitation, the Ayutthaya Provincial Prison would focus on education, while Pathum Thani’s Youth Offender Institution would focus on sport, Khao Prik Prison in Nakhon Ratchasima and Khao Kling Open Prison in Phetchaburi would focus on agriculture, department chief Wittaya Suriyawong said.
Wittaya said the department oversees 330,000 inmates in 143 prisons, but prisons eligible for the project were not maximum-security and must be deemed as ready. At the 1,500-inmate Ayutthaya prison, which would be a model for education, 1,000 high-potential inmates with less than 10 years remaining to serve would study Mathayom 1-3 with the Non-Formal Education Commission, the Distance Education via Satellite from Klai Kangwon School and specially hired tutors.
The vast Youth Offenders Institution in Pathum Thani would also see inmates learning from sport instructors from the Thailand Sport Association, he said.
