CDC chief hits back at Prasong

BORWORNSAK UWANNO, head of the Constitution Drafting Committee, yesterday lashed back at Prasong Soonsiri for casting the draft charter in a bad light, saying the situation now was not the same as in 2007.

He said he understood the comment from Prasong, chief framer of the Constitution of 2007, but had to make some adjustments to reflect the present circumstances.
He did not want to be overly attached to the previous work of 1997 and 2007. The new version would be unprecedented because it would have to coincide with national reform and reconciliation. The problems the country faced years ago were not as serious as now, he said.
He said he had not heard anything from mid-sized political parties, which would be hit hard if the new charter is promulgated. Only large parties have criticised the draft.
The detractors were only interested in how to accrue power and no one talked about reform and strengthening people’s roles.
What the new charter could not remedy is the political culture.
“We cannot stop voters from selling their votes or uproot nepotism from Thai society and change the behaviour of people who avoid laws,” Borwornsak said.
“Politicians must develop their consciences to uphold political ethics. This is what academics call ‘non-written law’.”
