Surapong Tovichakchaikul said Thaksin intended to go to Singapore to pay his respects to Lee’s family. He may not be present at the official function but he will attend the portion of the funeral that is open to the public.
“It is unlikely that he will meet General Prayut, who will also attend the event on Sunday. However, if they meet, Thaksin is expected at least to greet him with a smile,” he said.
Surapong was speaking yesterday at the Singaporean Embassy in Bangkok after signing a book of condolences for Lee. He was joined by former prime ministers Yingluck Shinawatra and Somchai Wongsawat.
Lee, the founding father of Singapore and also the father of current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, died on Monday. He was 91.
