Senior judges protest over limited roles

A NUMBER of senior judges whose retirement had been extended to cope with the backlog in the courts will today launch a campaign against a policy by the National Reform Council to limit their duties to the lower court.

Sri-amphorn Salikupt, a Supreme Court judge, said he hopes to acquire a hundred signatures and will begin collecting today.
Under the ongoing justice reform initiated by the NRC, the age of senior judges should be designated for those already retired at 60-65 years, and their supportive roles should be limited to the lower court. This policy is aimed at coping with the long-standing shortage of experienced judges, which has resulted in a large number of court cases taking years to complete.
The judges said a minor provision of the now-defunct 2007 constitution had somewhat solved the problem and eased the workload of the judges, especially with the help of senior judges or expertise judges whose retirement had been extended to cope with the workload.
