Plea to shut gold mine

Some 30 residents of Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun provinces who were affected by a gold-mining operation yesterday urged the Department of Primary Industries and Mines director-general Surapong Chiangthong to consider shutting down the mine.

Their request was made at the department office in Bangkok, after a test result by the Environmental Office Region 3 in Phichit had reportedly shown that water in the rice field near the mine was contaminated with cyanide at 8.6 milligrams per litre.
