Export contracts 1.7% in April

Thailand's export revenue in April contracted by 1.7 per cent to US$16.9 billion from the same period last year, according to the Commerce Ministry.

In March, the export contracted 4.45 per cent on year.
In the first four months of this year, exports which contribute about two thirds of gross domestic product contracted 3.99 per cent, to $70.265 billion.
Inspector-General of the Commerce Ministry Somkiat Triratpan said that the situation showed an improvement due to lower contraction in agricultural and industrial exports. Meanwhile, major trade partners have also shown economic improvement.
Import in April was down by 6.84 per cent on year to $17.4 billion, compared to 5.89 per cent year-on-year contraction in March.
In the first four months, total imports were tuned at $69.4 billion, down by 6.53 per cent from the same period last year. Thailand gained $906 million in trade surplus during January and April.
