Sports and rainbows in Bangkok skies

SOCIAL media outlets were full this week of the latest news and messages about two major sporting events - the 28th SEA Games and FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.

Thanks to the messages, people unable to watch the games have been able to keep up with the medal tally and developments. In fact, one social-media user said following the #SEAGames2015 and #FIFAWWC2015 hashtags felt like they were watching the games for real.
The biggest event that dominated timelines on Wednesday evening was the Thailand’s football match against Vietnam, which drew innumerable messages cheering the Thai team on. Thailand won the match 3-1.
Social media was again flashing with congratulatory messages yesterday, when Thailand won against Myanmar in the sepak takraw men’s doubles final.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his wife Naraporn were present at the game and even handed the medals to the winning team.
Apart from posting the latest results and the medal tally, many people also posted game highlights on their timelines.
Similarly, every match that the Thai team played in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada grabbed people’s attention and was highlighted on social media. Timelines were filled with messages cheering the Thai team for its 3-2 win against Ivory Coast yesterday.
Apart from sport, many people also shared experiences and photographs about the bad traffic jams brought on by heavy downpours on Monday.
Yet, the following evening, timelines were filled with photographs of beautiful sunsets and rainbows in Bangkok’s sky.
There is actually a group of sky lovers that has set up a “Cloud Lover Club” Facebook page, on which they share photos of Bangkok skies every day.
The page was established some five years ago and has close to 50,000 members.
Clearly, this week has been a busy one on social media, what with games and news about traffic jams, rainbows and flooding.
