New court to deal with 3 rising crimes

THE CRIMINAL COURT has set up a new division to deal specifically with cases involving human smuggling, corruption and illegal drugs in order to help speed up the trials of such cases, a senior judiciary official said yesterday.

Sarawut Benjakul, deputy secretary-general of the Office of the Judiciary, said that the Criminal Court had to deal with a large number of cases involving those crimes.
“Cases of human smuggling, corruption and illegal drugs are complex and involve suspects who are well connected and influential. So the trial is often difficult,” Sarawut said. “We believe the new division will improve the efficiency of trials.”
He said that the Office of the Judiciary had prepared for the establishment of the new division for a year.
The division’s establishment has been announced in the Royal Gazette, with effect from Friday.
