Security tightened on Thai-Myanmar border

Myawady - The Myawaddy-Mae Sot border has seen a fewer travellers and stricter security forces at both ends, after the deadly explosion in Bangkok on August 17.

The Myanmar nationals returning from Bangkok have fallen in numbers, maybe because of the heightened security, said a police officer at the Myawaddy Friendship Bridge. A Myanmar expat in Mae Sot, Thailand, added that the vehicles to Thailand have been inspected more thoroughly than before.
The Myanmar Embassy in Thailand warned its citizens to avoid possible bomb targets, which includes central areas of Bangkok.
It said migrant workers, civil servants studying at Thai universities under the government’s programme, students studying in Thailand, visitors and health tourists should avoid sites listed by the Thai government.
These are Ratchaprasong intersection, Pathumwan intersection, Silom Road, Khao San Road, Narathiwat intersection, Victory Monument, Tuek Chai intersection, Benjasiri Park, Soi Thong Lor, and Sukhumvit Road.
Than Aye, a worker in a plastic factory in Samut Sakhon, about 50km from Bangkok, said: “There is no restrictions in our area. The business is as usual.”
