Senior judge supports "beneficial" draft charter

Constitutional Court judge Charan Pakdeethanakul yesterday praised the draft charter for paving the way for the rule of law.

“I admired the draft charter because it specifies elements relating to the rule of law… Personally, if this draft constitution is approved, it will be beneficial for the entire society and the system of rule,” said Charan.
But he cautioned that international norms and standards should also be reflected in the draft charter. According to Charan, this was to let the foreign community know that Thailand could establish a set of norms that suited the context of society and meet international standards at the same time.
Future challenges to the country’s administrative cadres were that they had to deal with interference from the outside, notably from major and great foreign powers, Charan said.
“I believe that this draft constitution takes into account [this issue] and tries to respond to [this challenge]. I am confident that [the charter drafters] also bear this aspect in their minds,” Charan noted.
