Elderly woman shot dead in Narathiwat

An elderly woman was shot dead yesterday in a pre-dawn attack in Bacho district in Narathiwat that was reportedly aimed at her kamnan son.

At about 6am, police and security officers inspected the 65-year-old victim’s house in Ban E-yoh village of Tambon Ba-re Nua. There they found the body of Leemo Kama at the front door. Police collected seven spent M16 assault rifle cartridges and three bullets at the house.
Police said the unidentified assailants were at the house’s entrance when two of them, each carrying an M16, walked to the front of the house. They said Leemo opened the front door and they opened fire, killing her instantly.
The men fled in a vehicle parked on the main road near the house.
Police suspect that the intended target was Leemo’s son Niseng Kama, kamnan of Tambon Ba-re Nua. They are trying to pinpoint the motive.
There was another shooting on Friday night in Tambon Lubobaya in Yi-ngor in Narathiwat. Lubo Kuwae village head Maro-meureng Hengmaniro, 45, was shot twice while heading home on a motorcycle after visiting a mosque. Two men on a motorcycle targeted him.
Police suspected the attack was part of ongoing unrest in the South.
