Trash fire forces hundreds out of homes

Residents in three tambons of Sa Kaew's Wattana Nakhon district have had to flee as a fire at a municipal dumpsite sent thick black smoke to areas within its 5 kilometre radius.

The site reportedly contained 50,000 tonnes of garbage pending disposal.
Following reports of the blaze at Tambon Wattana Nakhon municipality’s 7-rai dumpster, which affected nearby residents, district chief Wutdanai Sawadinareunart yesterday inspected the scene where three fire engines were still trying to put out the fire. Ban Non Moo 2 village headman Udom Chanmee said the fire had broken out two days earlier and spread among mountains of trash.
Army field doctors were dispatched to provide health checks for affected residents. Burapha task force head Maj-General Srisak Poonprasit also sent in more water trucks and 20 soldiers to aid the efforts.
