Court rejects petition calling for FB ‘offender’ to be freed

THE Criminal Court yesterday tossed out a petition for the immediate release of a man held for sharing controversial information on Facebook on the Rajabhakti Park scandal.

The court said the petition had contradictory details.
After Thanet Anantawong was arrested at a hospital on December 13 for allegedly violating Article 116 of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crime Act, Sirawit Serithiwat, an anti-coup student, requested that the court look into Thanet’s detention.
The petition claimed Thanet was illegitimately detained, but it also said Thanet was aware that an arrest warrant had been taken out against him and that he had planned to surrender to fight the charges.
Sirawit said he would submit another petition tomorrow.
At the centre of the Rajabhakti Park scandal is Deputy Defence Minister Udomdej Sitabutr.
A panel established by the Defence Ministry is now looking into the affair, as are other agencies such as the Centre for National Anti-Corruption (CNAC).
Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya, who chairs the CNAC, said he would not comment on the Rajabhakti Park case anymore.
Earlier, General Paiboon said the project was mired in graft. His words prompted General Udomdej to comment, without identifying anyone by name, that someone was quick to draw a conclusion without even waiting to see all the evidence.
Udomdej yesterday ignored calls for him to clarify the Rajabhakti Park scandal.
“Let the fact-finding panel do its work and release its results first,” he said.
