Junta may lift political parties meeting ban

The junta is considering allowing political parties to hold meetings but the lifting of the ban will not happen now, said Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan.

The Democrat Party this month submitted a letter to the National Council for Peace and Order calling on it to scrap its order banning political parties from holding activities so they can solve internal problems.
“Wait not for long. We are about [to scrap] it. But all parties must be treated the same. However, it all depends on the PM’s decision,” he said.
Prawit, the defence minister, denied he was considering setting up a political party, saying he and other junta members had no desire to be in politics.
“[It’s] just a rumour. I have neither [the desire] in my mind nor [does] the PM and NCPO members. We don’t want power,” he said.
He said he wanted to work to return democracy to the country and felt very tired.
