A top contender in the race for the Philippines' presidency won a reprieve from disqualification Monday when the Supreme Court granted a temporary restraining order barring electoral authorities from implementing their decision.

The Elections Commission last week disqualified Senator Grace Poe's candidacy for president in 2016 due to questions over her citizenship.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, acting on behalf of the tribunal, which was on recess, directed the commission "to cease and desist from implementing" Poe's disqualification "until further orders" from the court.//DPA
