More time sought for Koh Tao appeal

The Law Society of Thailand may seek more time to file an appeal against the Surat Thani court's death sentence handed down to two Myanmar migrant workers.

After a discussion with Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand Win Maung, Dej-Udom Krairit, president of the lawyers' association, said that a committee was set up to scrutinise the court's sentence and the association may not be able to file the appeal within 30 days after the sentence was handed down.
"The appeal could take 1-3 years," Dej-Udom said.
The association's team has made 26 trips to Koh Tao. Its lawyers provided pro-bono legal services to the workers - Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Tun.
According to Dej-Udom, the ambassador said he would ask for the government's financial support, pending for a fee report from the association.
The association also plans to seek the court's approval to bring the two convicts from Surat Thani prison to a prison in Bangkok, to facilitate the legal process.
