Last year, the US put Thailand in Tier 3, the worst category of its TIP reports, for the second year in a row.
Thai authorities have been trying to improve the country’s ranking. Tier 3 countries are at risk of punitive actions from the US.
Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, the defence minister, disclosed yesterday that relevant Thai authorities would announce the country’s progress in combating human trafficking on Monday.
“There is progress as we fight illegal fishing, human trafficking, child labour and prostitution,” he said.
He said further progress would be reported to the US in March.
Panitan Wattanayagorn, an adviser to Prawit, said Thai and foreign media would be invited to the press conference on Monday.
“We have made considerable progress. We hope Thailand won’t end up in Tier 3 again,” he said.
