NLA passes first reading of bill to replace outdated nuclear act

The National Legislative Assembly Thursday approved the bill that seeks to replace the outdated nuclear act.

The bill proposed by the Science Ministry was approved with 189 votes. Two NLA members abstained.
The NLA set up a panel of 15 members to vet the bill before sending it back to the NLA for the second and third readings.
Science Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj told the NLA that the Atoms for Peace act, which has been enforced since 1961, has become outdated would not best ensure safety for the people so it has to be replaced by the new nuclear draft legislation.
Pichet said the bill would seek to project the people and environment against danger from the use of nuclear power in line with international standards.
The bill seeks to appoint a committee chaired by the prime minister to be in charge of supervising the use of nuclear power as well as radiators and radiating materials.
The bill would exempt foreign vehicles and foreign military vehicles from the law enforcement.
