The 88th Academy Award ended with a surprise, as "Spotlight" was announced the Oscar winner for Best Picture instead of heavy favourite "The Revenant".

Directed by Tom McCarthy, it is also the Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay.
The film received 5 other nominations, including Best Picture, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Directing, and Film Editing.
The film revisited the investigation by The Boston Globe's Spotlight team in 2001. The team investigated Father John Geoghan, who is accused of molesting more than 80 boys. As they dig deeper and acknowledge their paper's own failings, the team uncovers a conspiracy of lawyers and government officials who helped the Boston Archdiocese hide the pedophilia of many priests and deny justice to the victims.
