Myanmar presidential nomination date moved up

YANGON - Myanmar's parliament will move up the presidential nomination date from March 17.

Today, the parliament will announce the new date when presidential candidates will be nominated, according to the parliamentary agenda.

Upper House Speaker Mann Win Khaing Than previously announced that the nominations would be submitted on March 17.

MPs also confirmed the change.

“It’s apparently an effort to make Daw Aung San Suu Kyi the president. This is giving her party more time to form the new government. Now discussions with the army chief are finished and I believe there is some sort of agreement regarding the Section 59(f). And I think they have already selected ministers and deputy ministers. If the presidential election date is set a week earlier, they will have more time to select union ministers,” said MP Phay Than from Rakhine National Party.

The move came after Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) held a central committee meeting on Feb 28 in Nay Pyi Taw.

Although the NLD’s central committee member Win Htein said members just discussed the party’s affairs and complaint letters, political analysts guessed that the discussion involved issues such as presidential nomination and new administration.

Three names will be nominated for the presidency. One with the highest vote will become the country’s president while the other two will be vice presidents.
