Pol Maj-General Piyapan Pingmuang, the deputy national police spokesman, said yesterday that the Technology Crime Suppression Division would check audio recordings of the alleged frame-up.
Atchariya Rueangratanapong, president of the Help Crime Victim Club, had filed a complaint on Tuesday to Prayong Preeyajit, secretary-general of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, claiming that police from the precinct in Bang Plat district had forced a theft suspect in a 2014 Buddha statue-renting case to cough up money to escape the false charges.
Piyapan said national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda had ordered an urgent probe and evidence was now being gathered.
The investigation would follow standard procedures and would depend on evidence, so no timeframe had been set yet, he added.
