Thailand fears return of leprosy because of labour migration

The soaring labour migration in the Asean Economic Community (AEC) may raise the risks of many diseases including leprosy in Thailand.

If migrant babysitters and elderly caretakers from neighbouring nations come to Thai soil with leprosy, there is a real risk that the disease will spread to the persons placed under their care.
“This is because via such jobs, they will have very close contact with Thais over a long period of time,” Control Department’s specialist Dr Krisada Mahotan said Friday.
