NLA okays with question on senators' power to elect PM

An additional referendum question, asking whether voters would approve that during the five-year transition the Parliament, comprising the upper and the lower houses, is eligible to choose the prime minister, was Thursday passed the National Legislative A

A representative from NLA’s subpanel on opinions gathering Klanarong Chantik reasoned that such a practice would ensure the reform plans would be carried out during the transition of five years after the next elected government took office.

Three NLA members joined in discussing why the selected Senate should be entitled to join the elected MPs in approving of the PM.

NLA member Wallop Tangkananurak said he wholeheartedly supported the proposed extra referendum question. However, in his opinion the Senate should also be able to vote in no confidence of the whole Cabinet or any of its members.

Other members also agreed with the proposed question, saying that the crises facing the countries in the past decade could be prevented this way.

The question was endorsed yesterday with 152 votes and 15 abstentions.

The question would be forwarded to Election Commission for preparation as it would be asked in the referendum set to take place in August 7 along with the question to approve the constitution draft.
