Myanmar military chief slated for Brunei visit

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Min Aung Hlaing, is planning an official visit to Brunei in the near future, said the country’s ambassador to Brunei.

Cho Htun Aung said following the transition from military rule to the first democratically-elected civilian government in decades, Yangon will be seeking to reaffirm ties with its Asean neighbours.
In 2015, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) provided the emergency response assistance to severely flood-affected areas of Myanmar, which the ambassador said contributed to the recovery and rehabilitation of those areas.
“There are many ways we can improve cooperation with Brunei, we have very minimal trade volume at the moment and maybe in the coming years it will be improved also,” Cho said yesterday on the sidelines of an event to celebrate Thingyan, the Myanmar water festival.
There are currently about 400 Myanmar citizens working in Brunei, most of them medical professionals. The two countries established diplomatic relations on September 21, 1993. Both sides opened their missions in the respective capitals in 1997.
