The petition was filed by Wai Yan Aung from the All Myanmar Federation of Teachers at Kangyidaunk Myoma Police Station in Ayeyawady Region on May 2.
"I filed the petition against Nay Myo Wai, chairman of the Peace and Diversity Party, for his defamatory posts against the president, the state counsellor and the commander-in-chief of defence services. Among his posts, 15 are the worst. I'm doing this as an attempt to prevent both him and other instigators from disintegrating the union," said Wai Yan Aung.
Wai Yan Aung was imprisoned for three months under section 18 of the Peaceful Assembly and Procession Law for leading the student protest march in Ayeyawady Region against the National Education Law last year.
The police station accepted the case and is launching an investigation under section 66(d) of the law. Under this section, the person arrested and charged will not be granted bail.
Police inspector Thein Lwin, acting head of the Kangyidaunk Myoma Police Station, said that it remained unknown if Nay Myo Wai was the true user of the Facebook page.
"After the investigation, we will suggest whether or not we should charge him. As it is under the Telecommunications Law, we have to seek approval from the Minister for Communications and Information Technology," he said.
The investigation started on May 3.
