Trump has repeatedly said he would ask Japan to increase its contributions toward the costs of stationing troops, but Wednesday’s remarks regarded the full coverage of the costs for the first time. Trump said, “We cannot afford to be the military and the police for the world,” adding that “you have to be prepared to walk” if those countries do not meet the demand.
Trump became the Republicans’ presumptive presidential nominee when his last rival, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, suspended his campaign on Wednesday.
