Sombat given two-month suspended jail term

The Appeals Court Thursday gave activist Sombat Boonngamanong a two-month suspended jail term after it convicted him for violating the summon order of the National Council for Peace and Order.

The court also ordered Sombat, better known as the editor of the online Lai Jud magazine, to pay a fine of Bt3,000.
After the sentence, Sombat flashed three-finger sign, which he said was not a symbol of opposition to the junta. Instead, he claimed, he wanted to show that he had to pay a fine of Bt3,000. Earlier, activists used three-finger sign, well-known from the Hunger Game series of movies, as a symbol to campaign against the junta.
Earlier, the Criminal Court acquitted Sombat on ground that the NCPO’s order could not be retroactively enforced against Sombat.
The activist said he would appeal against the ruling with the Supreme Court.
