Electric cars to lessen energy consumption

Thailand would save transport-related energy bills by Bt17 billion on annual average during 2032-2036, if the number of electric cars reaches 1.2 million units by 2036, said an energy official.

Twarath Sutabutr, director-general of the Energy Policy and Planning Office and the Energy Ministry's spokesman, said today that based on a research the policy would not hurt the automobile industry but instead strengthen the economy as a whole.
The study was conducted in collaboration with Thammasat University's research centre, to assess impacts of the policy on the automobile sector, transportation and the economy.
"The government has plotted and mapped measures in all dimenstions to promote electric cars and accommodate impacts on the auto industry and others. This needs cooperation from public and private organisations and other parties to achieve the goal," Twarath said.
