No survivors after two small planes collide mid-air in Alaska

Washington - There were no survivors of an apparent mid-air collision between two small planes near a wildlife refuge in a remote part of south-western Alaska, state authorities said Wednesday.

The two aircraft were described by an Alaska National Guard spokeswoman as a Cessna carrying three people and a Piper with two people on board, the Anchorage-based Alaska Dispatch News reported.

The collision was reported to Alaska State Troopers Wednesday morning at a site about 10 kilometres north-west of Russian Mission, a community of 300 people on the Yukon River, just outside the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.

Rescue workers flew by helicopter to the crash site from Bethel, about 100 kilometres south of Russian Mission.

"Rescue personnel on scene have confirmed there were no survivors in either aircraft," Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.

The collision is under investigation.
