Death toll from Indonesian flash floods, landslides rises to 26

Jakarta - The death toll from flash floods and landslides in Indonesia's West Java province has risen to 26, with 18 people still missing, an official said Thursday.

At least 23 people died in Garut district after floodwaters from overflowing rivers inundated neighbourhoods early Wednesday, said Sutopo Nugroho, spokesman for the national disaster management agency.

Hundreds of residents were also displaced.

In Sumedang district, three people died and another went missing after mudslides buried their homes on Tuesday, he said.

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which usually starts in October.
