220 tonnes of rice orderd directly from farmers

Entrepreneurs have already ordered 220 tonnes of rice from farmers, not traders, through an initiative of the Labour Ministry that pitches in to ease farmers’ woes over falling rice prices.

This initiative seeks to help farmers bypass middlemen, who may more often than not demand too high margin at the expense of rice growers.
“We have asked entrepreneurs that provide food to their workers as parts of welfare to consider buying rice directly from farmers,” Labour Protection and Welfare Department’s director general Sumet Mahosot said Sunday.
He disclosed that the purchase orders for rice via the Labour Ministry, as a result, had already moved past 220 tonnes.
