Yangon seatbelt law to take effect on Jan 1

Traffic police will take legal action against drivers who fail to wear a seatbelt in Yangon from January 1.

Since November 1, the traffic police have been educating drivers to wear seatbelts by distributing pamphlets at busy junctions.

“The National Road Safety Council has announced that it will start inspecting whether drivers and passengers wear seatbelts from January 1. Then action will be taken. There will be 22 joint traffic police groups, six in downtown and 31 patrol groups. These groups are educating drivers to wear seatbelts,” a spokesman for the traffic police said.

Under the Motor Vehicle Law, anyone not using a seatbelt could face a fine of up to 30,000 kyats or approximately US$22.6.
