NLA to deliberate Sangha Act amendment bill Thursday

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is scheduled to deliberate the proposed amendment bill to the Sangha Act Thursday to change of the power of appointing a new Supreme Patriarch.

The agenda was added to the agenda meeting Wednesday by NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai.
This proposal involves just one article or Article 7 to calls for the power of appointing a new Supreme Patriarch to be returned to the King, as was the case in the legislation’s original 1962 version.
Pol General Pichit Khuandechakupt, the chair of the NMA committee on religions, arts, culture and tourism, proposed the change to the 1992 Sangha Act citing the need to stick by the long-lasting tradition.
A total of 84 NLA members have already signed their name in support of the proposed change.
Observers said the revision would affect the current acting Supreme Patriarch or Somdet Chuang or Somdet Phra Maha Ratcha Mangkhlachan.
