Local people protest against landfill site for Samui waste

About 200 people in Surat Thani’s Kanchanadit district Wednesday rallied against a planned landfill site near their villages.

The people rallied at the village hall of Moo 1 village in Tambon Takhien Thong in Kanchanadit.
They said they represented villagers in Tambon Takhien Thong and Tambon Thungkong, who disagree with the plan to open a landfill site in Moo 1 village of Tambon Takhien Thong for burying 300,000 tonnes of accumulated garbage on Koh Samui.
The protesters fear that the landfill would cause environmental impact and health hazard to residents of the two tambon.
They vowed to protest until the plan is scrapped.
