40 Thai Tourists Held Hostage by Karens in Myanmar

Around 40 Thai tourists were being held as hostage by the group of ethnic Karen people in Myanmar near the border with Thailand at Kanchanaburi on Saturday morning.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Krisana Pattanacharoen disclosed that the Thai tourist group was being held captive  because the Karens were angry with the Thai authorities that arrested one of their men on the human trafficking case and demanded for his release in return of letting the hostages free.

However, as of the press time, all hostages have reportedly been released as the result of negotiations between the Thailand – Myanmar border committee and the Karen group.

Nevertheless, the police still did not disclose further detail of the incident. Police also denied to give comments on why the Thai tourist group went to that area and how they were captured.
