The Myanmar government will not allow new coal production projects, Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Ohn Win told the media.

“The government is only allowing the existing coal projects. The ministry is checking whether the production is in accord with regulations. Coal production is very important,” he said.
Ohn Win said he did not know the exact number of factories which were powered by coal.
“The industrial ministry will know better,” he said. “We checked the factories which are advised by the industrial ministry.
“No factory has been closed. There will be restrictions in each factory. People are opposed to coal power so we have to do environmental and social impact assessments.”
Ohn Win said the authorities needed to check if hazardous substances were being emitted. There are ways to prevent the dangerous gases. The government needs to think about it,” the minister added.
