Chaturon slammed for discrediting govt

Alongkorn Ponlaboot, vice president of the National Reform Steering Assembly, slammed Pheu Thai Party’s Chaturon Chaisang for being behind in news and discrediting the government.

He was responding to Chaturon’s recent remark in which he said that reforms had come relatively late, were not open enough and had no clear direction.
Alongkorn said remarks such as this had a direct impact on the reform effort, adding that reform was about repairing and rebuilding the country as problems have been persisting for a long time. Also, he said, the reform efforts had been kicked off more than two years ago.
He went on to say that the work of the five rivers of power was systematic and had a clear timeframe in completing reforms and setting a national strategy.
The process began in 2014 and has always been conducted in an open manner with inclusive participation, the reformer said.
The work was passed down from the now-defunct National Reform Council to the NRSA, he said. So far, more than a thousand stages have been set up in all provinces and regions, Alongkorn said, adding that all sectors had participated in writing the reform plan which consisted of 11 points.
The veteran politician argued that the reform had a clear direction to develop the country and strengthen it so it can compete with others. The aim of all this is to escape from the middle income trap and become a high-income country, he said.
Alongkorn added that in the past couple of years, the country had seen improvement in many areas. However, continuous reform effort was still necessary and cooperation from all sides, including constructive criticism, was necessary for a better future of the country.
He said it was not fair to discredit the reform efforts for political gain because many people had been working hard to make it tangible.
