University’s social media rules criticised for muzzling staff

A northern university has warned its faculty members against using social media in a way damaging to its reputation.

Offending posts may affect staff performance reviews and salary adjustments, according to the recently introduced university rules.
The rules describe the use of social media harmful to the university’s image as inappropriate behaviour, warning that staff engaging in such action shall not get more than a “fair” mark in performance evaluations, which determine salary increases.
“Fair” marks for two consecutive years also mean staff risk losing their jobs.
The rules have caused a stir among university lecturers across the country with critics saying the rules are designed to muzzle faculty staff.
