Only a few vehicles exempt from Article 44 seat belt order: DLT

TUK-TUKS are among a certain group of vehicles that are exempt from the government’s new seat belt order, a senior Department of Land Transport official said Thursday.

Under the latest Article 44 order, all drivers and passengers are required to buckle up. But vehicles that cannot have seatbelts installed – motorised trishaws or tuk-tuks, pickup trucks with an extra bench, and two-bench taxi-buses, also known as song thaew – will be exempt.
The department’s deputy director-general, Kamol Buranapong, said all other types of vehicles for public transport – including taxis, inter-provincial buses and school buses – would be required to have seat belts installed to ensure occupants’ safety.
“This is part of the measures to be implemented before the Songkran festival in an attempt to reduce road accidents,” the official said.
