Red-shirt leaders’ defamation case against Suthep thrown out
The Criminal Court on Tuesday dismissed a defamation case against Suthep Thaugsuban, a former deputy prime minister in the Abhisit government, after he had implicated three key red-shirt leaders and former Pheu Thai MPs of causing damage to the country and performing terrorist-like actions in interviews in 2011.
The three at the centre of the claims were United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship president Jatuporn Prompan, Nattawut Saikua, and Weng Tojirakarn.
However, the court said Suthep’s interviews were based on information he had received from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) in his capacity as deputy prime minister in charge of security.
It was a set of facts fed to him under a legal framework, and he was made to believe that they were true, the court ruled
The court also dismissed another accusation that Suthep had violated Election Commission law, as the three persons were still able to be MPs without having been affected by his interviews.
