Chiang Mai officials insist canal clean enough for Songkran

The Muang Chiang Mai Municipality tried to pacify Songkran revellers on Monday over fears water in the Khu Muang canal surrounding the old city area is unsafe for use during Songkran.

Muang Chiang Mai mayor Thassanai Buranupakorn led officials to inspect the water quality, a few days after Facebook users flagged this as a potential issue.
Khu Muang Chiang Mai is a popular destination for Songkran revellers.
Thassanai said the municipality lowered the water in the canal last month and replaced the water from an irrigation canal and also put chlorine in the water several times to increase the water quality.
