The Supreme Patriarch, Somdet Phra Ariyawongsakha-tayan, has suggested that Thais abandon their fondness for water weapons and raucous splashing during Songkran and return to the original, thoughtful rituals practised in observing the Thai New Year.

He cited the traditional practices of seeking the blessings of respected elders and the gentle pouring of water over fellow celebrants.
The country’s most senior monk made the comment on Monday as National Office of Buddhism director-general Pongporn Parmsneh led officials in seeking his blessings for the New Year. The Supreme Patriarch urged them to try and encourage the public to celebrate Songkran in accordance with venerable traditions.
