Student activists granted Bt50,000 bail on contempt charge

Six student activists were each granted bail of Bt50,000 on Monday while their hearing was postponed because a seventh accused activist failed to show up in court.

They denied a contempt of court charge and vowed to fight the case. They turned down their right to legal representation.
A seventh activist, Sirawith Seritiwat aka Ja New, did not appear at Khon Kaen Provincial Court yesterday. He is a prominent Bangkok-based anti-junta activist.
Khon posted on his Facebook on Sunday that he would not go to the court because he had not received the summons and was caught up in personal affairs.
The court ordered that all the defendants submit a testimony paper within 15 days.
The seven accused were friends and supporters of lese majeste suspect Jatupat Boonpatararaksa, aka Pai Dao Din. They had been charged after staging a symbolic demonstration against the court’s decision to reject bail for Pai.
